Dual citizenship petition for Zambians launchedMarch 22, 2015 A petition for Zambians living abroad who support dual citizenship has been launched. George Mtonga who is spearheading the petition told Zambian Eye that they hope to present these signatures to the Zambian government to show their support of dual citizenship.Below is the petition:We believe in the positive influence of our politics in Zambia and while we live abroad we are in every sense of the words ” fully zambian.” We will be contacting many leaders in Zambia to advocate for dual citizenship.Currently the law is that if a Zambian, born in Zambia, adopts the citizenship of another country then they loose their Zambian citizenship. Even though most of us live abroad we eventually want to come home, and for most of us the reason we are abroad is due to the opportunities that we have found in foreign lands. WE DO INTEND on going back to Zambia; but we would want our children, who in every sense of the word to have the option of securing their Zambian citizenship if they ever wanted and for us not to loose our home just because we live abroad. If you need any information on this campaign please feel free to contact me and I will be more than happy to furnish the information. George MtongaEven though I live in the diaspora, through your organization I have written articles and added to the civic engagement of Zambians in Zambia, in addition to that in 2014 I raised $4000 to build a bore hole at kaniki clinic, and this year Im scheduled to raise $20, 000 to send Zambian girls to school in Zambia. I have continued, while living abroad, to be an advocate of my country in many ways. The thought of loosing my citizenship simply because I decide to take up citizenship of my adopted country is something that hurts me; because even though Im in America I will never be called American Im called Zambian American.. only in Zambia do they call me Zambian. The current laws make me an outcast in my own country. This is why we have launched this petition; so that we are not made foreigners in our father and mother’s land. Here is the link to those willing to sign the petition CLICK HERE
